Physical exercises for children’s yoga
Just like adult yoga, children’s yoga includes physical postures—known as asanas. Depending on the age group, these poses are either interpreted playfully and creatively or closely follow the structure of classical yoga postures. Below, I’ve shared three of my favourite asanas that are perfect for integrating into a children’s yoga session.

Tree Pose (Vrikshasana)
From standing:
- Place your hands on your hips.
- Shift your weight onto your right foot and lift your left knee towards your chest.
- Gently open the left knee out to the side and place your foot on the inner thigh, calf or ankle of your standing leg (avoid placing it directly on the knee!).
- Find your balance and hold, bringing your palms together in front of your chest or stretching them overhead.
Warrior Pose (Virabhadrasana I)
- Step your right foot forward between your hands and bend the front knee.
- Place the back (left) foot flat on the mat, turning it slightly to the left.
- Lift your upper body and extend your arms overhead. You can press your palms together or keep them shoulder-width apart.
- Keep your hips and torso facing forward, engaging your core.
- Press into the outer edge of your back foot for stability, with your front knee bent at 90 degrees.

Bow Pose (Dhanurasana)
Lying on your stomach:
- Bend your knees and reach your arms back to take hold of your ankles.
- Keep your knees hip-width apart and gently press your ankles into your hands.
- On an inhale, lift your chest and thighs off the mat, allowing your body to arch into a bow shape.
- Keep your gaze forward or slightly upward, maintaining a sense of ease in the neck.
- Breathe calmly and steadily, holding the posture for a few breaths.
- To release, exhale and slowly lower your body back down to the mat.
